How did you move your stuff?
Many years ago, before we accumulated so much "stuff" I used to buy a used van as cheap as I could (some as low as $300), make the move and then sell the van for what I paid for it.
When we moved all of our "stuff" from ND to AZ, I shopped around and found a good used truck with a 22ft van body. I purchased the truck for $6,000; made the move to AZ and resold the truck for $6,000. Saved about $2,500 by not having a rental truck. Next month we are going to move to a new house about 40 miles away; we're just going to use our own pickup truck. I made 2 ramps of 3/4" plywood so I can load and unload on each end. I
Would you move that way again?
The company paid for one move for us once; it was more bother than moving ourselves. We've never damaged or lost anything that we've moved ourselves, but the movers managed to damage several things. When they figured out that the company was going to pay for the move, they raised the price. Here in AZ, the movers hold your stuff for hostage and demand more money before they will unload. The smart people call the Attorney General's office; someone comes out from the AG's office and reads them the law and makes them unload. Those not savvy get ripped off.
What I'd Do Differently
- Enlist the aid of more friends and neighbors; don't do all of the heavy work yourself.
