Moving into a new home often means that we overlook potential hazards for babies and young children. Making sure your home is safe is key and should be carefully monitored as your child grows.
Baby-Proof Your Bathroom
- Keep medicines and cleaners locked up. Even if you move medications and cleaners to a cupboard that is out of reach, it's best to place a lock on the cabinet and to make sure it's locked at all times. Toddlers often find ways of getting into cupboards so keep them safe by keeping hazardous medicines out of reach.
- Baby-proof the toilet. Kids love to throw things down the toilet. My niece recently tried to flush her Barbie doll down, unsuccessfully. I recommend installing a toilet lock; it's easy to do and will keep toddlers from throwing things in and will keep them away from the water which is often enticing.
- Protect children from bumps in the tub. Line the bottom of the tub with non-slip mats to prevent your child from slipping. Use protective padding covers for the bathtub faucet and sides of the tub to protect young heads from bumps.
- Prevent children from locking themselves in. Install a door lock release that allows you into the bathroom when your child accidentally locks themselves in.
- Protect children from outlets. Outlet covers should be installed in all outlets in your home, including the bathroom.
