The Kid in the Red Jacket

By Barbara Park

The Bottom Line

From the Publisher: Ten-year-old Howard Jeeter's life is temporarily destroyed by a cross-country move. His first contact in Massachusetts is Molly, an intrusive first-grader, whose attempts to be friendly drive Howard to distraction. Park writes in a witty and bittersweet style about the awkward, super-sensitive age of early adolescence; her humor reflects and sharpens the sensibilities of her readers in the areas of family and friend relationships.

Pros
  • Funny and poignet
  • Great book about fitting in
  • Deals with the pangs of adolescence
Cons
  • Not appropriate for younger readers

Guide Review - Book Review: The Kid in the Red Jacket

In The Kid in the Red Jacket, the main character, Howard, must adapt to a new school, a new neighborhood, and the hardest of all - new friends. This book is a great read for young adults who have to leave behind good friends and pursue new friends, all the while being chased by a first-grader.

Laugh-out-loud funny! Highly recommended.
