How to Move Fragile Items

Packing and Moving Glassware, Stemware, Vases and More

By , About.com Guide

In my earlier days of moving, I always ended up with broken plates, glasses or other glassware. It was always my favorite piece and while I thought I had packed them correctly, I'd obviously missed something. So to ensure your precious items arrive at your new home in one piece, we've pulled together this list of how to properly prepare, pack and move your fragile items.

1. Make Sure You Have the Right Packing Supplies

When you move or relocate, to ensure your household goods arrive at your new destination without a scratch, start with a good packing list so you purchase the right packing and moving supplies. This is an area where you can cut down on moving costs if necessary, just keep in mind that doing so may increase labor time either when you are packing - having to double wrap items - or unpacking - newspaper results in dirty glassware. Your time is valuable and paying that little bit extra may also buy you peace of mind.

2. Choose the Right Box

Cell Box

Moving boxes are generally the same weight and quality as ordinary shipping boxes, unless you purchase some made from thicker cardboard that allows for heavier packing. But when moving fragile items, choosing the right box could be the difference between getting your things there in one piece and having to replace your favorite dishes.
