The Vet Interview
These are just some of the questions I ask. Tailor the questions to your own needs and those of your pets.
- How long have you been a vet and practicing at this clinic?
- Do you support teaching clients how to properly care for their pets?
- How often do you recommend that pets be vaccinated? This is a critical question for me. Having moved from California where the state just instituted vaccinations every two years, I want a vet that supports this decision. Again, ask what's appropriate for you.
- What is included in the annual exam?
- Do you have any specialties?
- When and how do you decide that a particular case is outside your realm of experience? A vet needs to know when to pass a case on to an expert. They should have enough local support to treat any case that comes to them.
- Explain the needs of your animals and ask how they'll be treated; what they recommend and how much they know about the disease.
- Ask if they support home procedures. Again, this is important for me and our high-needs pets. I want a vet who is willing to supply me with IV fluids, needles and anything else I might need to care for my pet.
- Do they have their own animals at home?
- Why did they become a vet?
- Are they associated with any non-profit societies, such as rescues or shelters? Do they volunteer their services or facilities?
Again, tailor the questions and tours to your needs and those of your pets. Finding a good vet takes time, but it's worth it to find one that will help you take the best care of your four-legged friends.
