Definition:
In many countries, an International Drivers Permit (IDP) is required in addition to a valid home country's driver's license. It must be obtained in your home country from an authorized licensing agency before you leave. If you're moving to another country, it's a good idea to get an IPD before you leave. This will allow you to drive while awaiting your new driver's license.
For more information see the article on International Driving Permits.
