Durham, North Carolina: With a population of just over 220,000, Durham is a haven for retirees. Duke University offers over the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute where seniors can enroll in over 100 courses for free. Course topics range from James Joyce's Ulysses to Geopolitics of the Middle East. They also offer social activities such as ballroom dancing, book groups and language clubs. The town itself offers affordable housing options with an average home price of $163,000.

Hanover, New Hampshire: Like Durham, Hanover has Dartmouth College, which also offers retirees the opportunity to attend classes. Real estate prices are quite a bit higher than Durham (median price is $400,000), however, outlying regions are much more affordable and commutable to downtown. It's also an outdoor enthusiasts dream, with five ski hills in the area, plus hiking and kayaking in the summer.

Lexington, Kentucky: Home to the University of Kentucky, retirees over 65 are invited to fill empty seats in regular courses for free - a tradition that's been running for more than 45 years. Plus, the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute also runs a program at the University of Kentucky for people over 50, offering less, but similar courses as Duke.
