Free Checklist to Help You Collect School Records Before You Move

Before you move your child to a new school, there are several documents you need to collect. School records will help your child transition to a new school and will provide invaluable information for future success.

Obtain addresses and contact information for all schools attended

This list will help you and the new school collect information on your child's educational history.

Obtain copies of transcripts and report cards

You should collect photocopies of school transcripts and report cards from every school attended, plus official copies that contain the school stamp and are kept in a sealed-envelope.

Copies of recommendation letters

Collect recommendation letters from teachers and/or school principle.  If your child will be trying out for school sport teams and clubs, you may want to gather letters from coaches and club leaders.

List of courses completed

While school transcripts will show which courses your child completed, having course outlines will show which topics were covered, texts read and work completed. This will give future educators a better idea of what your child has accomplished.

Copies of exams completed and scores obtained

Standardized exam results should be part of your child's educational portfolio.

Samples of work completed and graded

Make copies of work your child has completed. This may include tests taken, essays, art projects, etc... Choose pieces that best represents your child's passion and interests.

Include awards received

Create a page that indicates scholarships, awards and other achievements obtained.

Employer records and references

If you're child has had a part-time or summer job, keep letters of recommendation, including employer contact information.

Include immunization records

Keep track of  and include immunizations and other health related records that a school may require.
