While I sipped coffee this morning, I read an article about the BBB that made me pause. I use the BBB quite frequently to gauge movers, often thinking that if a mover gets a good rating from the Better Business Bureau than I should be in good hands.
But am I?
According to the bbbroundup.com, a website run by a former journalist (he lists his credentials but I'll leave it to you to decide what you think), the BBB gave fake companies A ratings, while companies such as Starbucks, who aren't BBB members, received a failing grade.
I don't know how much stock I put into the claims that the BBB is not trustworthy, as it'll still be a place I go for information on a mover when I need to hire one, but from now on I will ensure that it won't be my only source for information. In other words, it's a healthy reminder that when you're hiring movers or professional packers, you need to thoroughly research the company before signing on the dotted line.

The bbb is an entity that many consumers do not understand. The bbb will not help resolve a consumer problem, rather they shuffle paperwork between businesses and consumers in an attempt to treat both sides equitablly, rarely offering a reasonable solution to the problem, nor even attempting to understand (believe) what may or may not be a reasonable solution. Instead, the seek to pick the pockets of businesses for advertising and membership revenue in what could be described as legalized extortion.

Interesting post. I was just thinking about this the other day. I think the BBB still has it’s place, but I get frustrated with the accreditation issue. My company has a good grade on BBB, but potential customers ask us all the time why we aren’t accredited. We aren’t accredited because it’s a pay-for-play system. Anyone with a few thousand bucks can get that stamp of approval. I think that’s misleading.
Movers operate on such small margins that it’s hard to participate in pay-for-play programs. We just can’t do them all, which is unfortunate because it counts against us (even though we are fully reputable and have been for 125 years!).

No matter who says what i will always put my money on BBB and will bu putting so in future too. I feel their rating of a certain company is the most reliable one and thus can be trusted even blindfold.
