FAQ of the Week: Is An Estimate Based on Truck Space Okay?

Tuesday October 31, 2006

Mover and DollyA reader emailed saying that a moving company she was thinking of hiring quoted her an estimate based on cubic feet. She wanted to know if this was standard practice.

The answer is simply, no. Do not hire any company that provides an estimate based on cubic feet. This can be a sign of a rogue mover. Estimates should be based on weight, or if you're moving locally, then it can also be charged at an hourly rate.

There are two kinds of estimates: binding and non-binding. So, before you have the company come to your home, in the telephone interview, ask them upfront what kind of estimate they provide then decide if you want to take the next step.

Don't get caught by a mover who sounds too good to be true, because they probably are. (image: ClipArt.com)
